Immerse - VR Level Design
A downloadable game
These are level designs I did for a company called Immerse, which uses VR to teach languages. I developed these in Unity for the Meta Quest headset.
I worked on a small team as a VR level designer with the creative director, language expert, and lead VR developer. Working from a library of existing assets and some that I created from scratch, I produced 9 new levels, each a unique destination to fit a language learning theme (Resort Hotel, Bar, Daycare Center, Art Studio, etc..). It was a great group to work with. We used a Scrum / Agile management system, iterating through design updates, and ensuring the level layout was engaging and fun, and worked well with the language lessons and exercises.
It was a really fun experience where I could just embrace my imagination. I learned a lot about incorporating natural scene boundaries, and making a scene feel more realistic by adding randomized clutter, and imagining the story behind the scene, and what items would naturally be carelessly spread throughout. Sometimes, it's the background, extra props that best bring a scene to life.
Since this was designed for VR, I also had to monitor performance very carefully, keeping in mind aspects such as: count of vertices, quantity and types of colliders, use of shaders, etc... Finding that balance between creating a scene that feels filled and complete, while maintaining good performance. I actually found that these limitations led to more creative designs.
